Turnaround Time During Peak Season: What Firms Should Actually Expect
"How fast can you turn a return around" is usually the second question firms ask, right after price. The honest answer changes by week — and knowing that shape in advance is more useful than a single number.
Why turnaround isn't a flat number
Every overflow prep service has a best-case turnaround time, quoted for a standard return arriving on a normal week. Peak season doesn't run on normal weeks. The two or three weeks before major deadlines see volume spike across every firm sending returns at once, and honest turnaround estimates reflect that instead of promising the best case as if it were the average case.
What actually moves turnaround
- Return complexity. A standard W-2 return moves faster than a multi-state filing with a Schedule C attached.
- How complete the file is on arrival. Missing documents don't just delay one return — they delay the follow-up conversation needed to get them.
- Where the week falls relative to a deadline. The same return takes longer to turn around the week before April 15th than it does in early March.
- Whether the firm has a capacity reservation. Reserved capacity holds its turnaround window even during the weeks when ad hoc requests slow down.
Building a realistic internal timeline
- Ask for turnaround ranges by return type, not a single average.
- Ask specifically what turnaround looks like during the final two weeks before deadlines — not just in a normal week.
- Build your firm's own client-facing promises around the slower end of that range, not the fastest one.
Where the buffer actually helps
The value of realistic turnaround isn't just accuracy — it changes what your firm can promise clients up front. A firm that knows overflow returns take five business days in late March, not two, can set client expectations correctly the first time instead of walking them back later.
